THE rain in Spain fell mainly on the royal wedding Saturday. But the showers failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the 1,700 dignitaries and royals attending the storybook nuptials of Crown PrinceFelipe and Letizia Ortiz. Just ask Mica and Bob Mosbacher, who were among the VIPs in the cathedral for the ceremony. “It was fabulous,” Mica said Tuesday, just back from Spain.

The Mosbachers were among an elite handful also invited to a late-night dinner with the bride and groom and the royal family at Zarzuela Palace, residence of King Juan Carlos and QueenSofia. Among guests — the king of Norway and the king of Sweden. “I told Bob we were the only nonroyals there,” Mica laughed.

The Mosbachers’ access to the royal inner sanctum evolved over many decades. Bob met then-Crown Prince Juan Carlos in a sailing competition in Denmark in 1967. A beautiful friendship was formed. They regularly sailed against one another in international races. In 1969, Juan Carlos and Sofia came to Houston to celebrate his 30th birthday with Bob as their host.
